The Messianic Now - Philosophy, Religion, Culture (Hardcover): Arthur Bradley, Paul Fletcher The Messianic Now - Philosophy, Religion, Culture (Hardcover)
Arthur Bradley, Paul Fletcher
R2,707 Discovery Miles 27 070 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This collection explores the phenomenon of the messianic in contemporary philosophy, religion and culture. From the later Derrida 's work on Marx and Benjamin to Agamben and Badiou 's recent texts on St Paul, it is becoming possible to detect a marked messianic turn in contemporary continental thought. However, despite the plethora of work in the field there has not been any sustained attempt to think through the larger philosophical, theological and cultural implications of this phenomenon. What, then, characterises our contemporary messianic moment? Where does it come from? And why speak of the messianic now? In The Messianic Now: Philosophy, Religion, Culture, a group of internationally-known figures and rising stars within the fields of continental philosophy, religious studies and cultural studies come together to consider what the messianic might mean at the beginning of the 21st century. This book was published as a special issue of the Journal of Cultural Research.

Disciplining the Divine - Toward an (Im)political Theology (Paperback, New Ed): Paul Fletcher Disciplining the Divine - Toward an (Im)political Theology (Paperback, New Ed)
Paul Fletcher
R1,379 Discovery Miles 13 790 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Disciplining the Divine offers the first comprehensive treatment of the Social Model of the Trinity, exploring its central place within much theological discourse of the past half century, including its relation to wider cultural and political concerns. The book highlights the manner in which theologians have attempted to make the doctrine of God relevant to modern issues and outlooks and it charts the conditions that have necessitated such a reconfiguration of theological analysis. While interrogatory in tone and intent, Disciplining the Divine nevertheless provides a critical reconstruction of a Christian theology and practice which might be undertaken within the political and cultural contexts of the new millennium.

Shakespeare's Themes (Paperback): Paul Fletcher Shakespeare's Themes (Paperback)
Paul Fletcher
R495 Discovery Miles 4 950 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This work is concerned with showing how a full understanding of a Shakespeare work depends on an awareness of the central theme and related themes and noticing how these themes are presented as the play or poem moves forward from beginning to end. The book also shows how the works are interrelated, thus enabling us to gain an understanding of Shakespeare's works as a whole. It is assumed here that if we wish to catch the true spirit of Shakespeare, we must see him as a man of his time. Although there are some respects in which his view of life as a Renaissance Christian may not be acceptable to us, we should be able to respond to his presentation of human life as a perpetual battle between good and evil, where there is an especial need for integrity in those in authority, and where love in various forms is of supreme value. In a series of notes the book indicates how Shakespeare may have been directly influenced by that famous statement of Renaissance ideals, Castiglione's "The Book of the Courtier", available in Shakespeare's time in Sir Thomas Hoby's English translation. The format of the book is intended to be helpful to students and play-goers as well as more experienced readers of Shakespeare, as Fletcher goes through each of the Bard's works in turn, giving a brief synopsis and then discussing the work in relation to its wider themes.

Language Acquisition - Studies in First Language Development (Paperback, 2 Rev Ed): Paul Fletcher, Michael Garman Language Acquisition - Studies in First Language Development (Paperback, 2 Rev Ed)
Paul Fletcher, Michael Garman
R1,817 Discovery Miles 18 170 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The aim of the first edition of Language Acquisition was to provide as comprehensive a description and explanation as possible of the changes in the child's language as he or she grows older. In this second edition Paul Fletcher and Michael Garman have the same fundamental aim. Six years later the field has not changed dramatically, but there have been fruitful theoretical developments -- the learnability hypothesis, in particular, has been influentially expounded -- and empirical work seeking evidence of specific language capacities in children has made notable advances. Equally significant are shifts in emphasis: the growing interest in cross-linguistic studies, for example, or accounts of language development from a social-interactive perspective, or of the development of reading and writing.

All these changes are reflected in the second edition. About half the chapters are entirely new, having been specially commissioned for this edition. The remainder of the book consists of substantially revised versions of chapters from the first edition.

Like its predecessor, this collection is the work of distinguished specialists from many countries and will provide an invaluable resource for students and professionals alike who have an interest in the field of child language acquisition.

Memories of a Catholic Boyhood - Fall River (Paperback): Paul Fletcher Memories of a Catholic Boyhood - Fall River (Paperback)
Paul Fletcher
R453 Discovery Miles 4 530 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Essentially this is a memoir of growing to manhood in Fall River based on my Irish-Catholic family in the old New England textile town Fall River, Massachusetts. It is from the point of view (flawed or otherwise) of myself. The oldest of eight children and their first grandchild and the great ethnic surge of Irish, French Canadian, and Portuguese immigrant mill labor force during and after the Great Depression with the Catholic Church in Fall River including a few priests and a couple of aunts who are nuns. All of the above no doubt factors in my mother's nervous breakdown-as I move from parochial schools to the public high school, to a Catholic Seminary, on to the Bristol County (MA) T.B. Sanatorium, where amidst cure and chaos and the medical staff's hijinks I meet my future wife.

The Politics to Come - Power, Modernity and the Messianic (Paperback, NIPPOD): Arthur Bradley, Paul Fletcher The Politics to Come - Power, Modernity and the Messianic (Paperback, NIPPOD)
Arthur Bradley, Paul Fletcher
R1,602 Discovery Miles 16 020 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Politics to Come brings together an international collection of thinkers to consider the meaning of liberal democratic modernity at a moment when its future has never been less certain. It examines the explosive threats the liberal order confronts today: financial meltdown, religious extremism, environmental catastrophe. Yet, it also seeks to place these - singularly modern - crises within a much longer history. For the contributors to this collection, it is the ancient religious tradition called 'the messianic' that provides the critical lens through which modernity may be interrogated. In its ongoing struggles with the messianic, liberal modernity confronts the promise and threat of a radically new Politics to Come. So what are the Politics to Come? How do they manifest themselves throughout history? Why does the possibility of a messianic judgement continue to haunt the western political imaginary? This collection offers a series of political, philosophical and theological perspectives from which the future of liberal modernity - if it has one - can be imagined.
